ISO 216 specifies international standard (ISO) paper sizes used in most countries in the world today, although not in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, or the Dominican Republic. The standard defines the “A” , “B” and “C” series of paper sizes, including A4, the most commonly available paper size worldwide.

The tolerances specified in the standard are:

  • ±1.5 mm for dimensions up to 150 mm,
  • ±2.0 mm for dimensions in the range 150 to 600 mm, and
  • ±3.0 mm for dimensions above 600 mm.

The area of B series papers is the geometric mean of successive A series papers. Example, B1 is between A0 and A1 in size, as a result, B0 is 1 meter wide, and other sizes in the B series are a half, a quarter or further fractions of a meter wide. While less common in office use, it is used for a variety of special situations. Many posters use B series paper or a close approximation, a relatively common choice for books. The B series is also used for envelopes and passports.
